Quake 4 Strafe Jumping Tutorial
Learning the quick, fluid movement style of the Quake series is essential to your mastery of the games.

Essential Concepts:

Bunny Hopping

Move forward and jump (immediately release jump key, its just a quick tap)
Press and hold jump before you land releasing the jump key after you bounce.

You should notice that you jump again immediately upon landing. Try and string a bunch of those together.

Circle Jump

The following descriptions are all about the angles. Forward or &uarr will be described as 0º.

To circle jump you need to start out facing 90º from the direction you want to go (0º). You should master starting from either direction, but for the tutorial we will start out facing left 90º.

Start by turning your mouse towards 0º while simultaneously holding the right strafe key (the direction your are going). Jump at 20º to right and continue moving the mouse across 0º. You should have about 20º to left when landing.

You should practice doing this from either direction.

Strafe Jumping

A good strafe jumping run generally starts with a Circle Strafe and then continues the pattern, alternating mouse angles and swapping strafe keys. The most important part of this is the start. You continue as you begin. A strong and smooth Circle Strafe will get you moving quickly in a hurry.

Single beat strafes -

Jump, looking right, holding right strafe
Jump, looking left, holding left strafe
Jump, looking right, holding right strafe
Jump, looking left, holding left strafe

Double beat strafe - (Useful for when when you have gained speed or to avoid obstacles.)

Jump, looking left, holding left strafe
Jump, looking left, holding left strafe
Jump, looking right, holding right strafe

Oh really? I am going to have to bookmark this and try it out. All my life, I have done run forward, look right/left and jump, jump and look in the oppisite direction, etc.

The best tutorial by far is the one at Overdrive PC. W3sp is crazy good and I was very hesitant to write something for Q4, but since noone else was doing it...There are much more qualified people to do it than I. Watch some of his Q3 demos. Mad skills.
