Quake 4 News - 1.3 Patch First Impressions

Well, the 1.3 patch is out and the first impressions are in. The movement is greatly improved with some improvements in the weapons balancing. To my mind most of the changes in the weapons were minor except for the increase in the rocket speed and the nerfing of the nail gun. The improved rockets along with the increased movement speed should serve to settle down the rail whores as far as it's possible. Smaller hit boxes, similar to what GTR has done, would help further, but due to problems with clipping in single player that's not going to happen.

The only real complaint I would register at this point is directed at the mod teams. From what I understand the sdk was released to the mod times pretty far in advance so they could release simultaneously. For whatever reason none of the mod teams pulled that off. I am sure there was some reason behind it, but the unfortunate reality is that too many players are forming their opinions of the quality of this patch without the mods they are comfortable with and on mainly non-fps maps. After seeing some of the negative chatter on the True Carnage servers I shut them down and put all fps maps in rotation. After that, things were smoother and the server was full all night. Hopefully, we'll see the mods release today bringing the patch fully up to speed.

That does bring up the topic of the negativity I am seeing in some of the community forums. I would encourage everyone to judge the patch in the full light of day. Make sure you are not just jumping on a VQ4 server without an optimized config and then throwing your hands up when it feels rough. C'mon! When have we EVER been able to do that. None of us would consider doing that in Q3 and I have seen far too many people do that exact thing since yesterday.

Hopefully, those people will settle down and give the patch the time it deserves. As for myself I give id a thumbs up for their effort and I hope there will be further patches and continued development. This game has far more potential than Q3 ever did and I hope we get to the point where everyone agrees on the direction and role Q4 will play in the continued growth of esports.
