| Quake 4 News - CPL Blunders....maybe | |
In one of the all time crazy esport decisions, the CPL announced today that they will be using Q3 as their 1 v 1 game going forward. The decision itself is not crazy, just the timing. SyncError has said that id is working feverishly to get the 1.3 patch out in time for Quakecon which is a little more than 2 weeks away. If the patch comes out and is as polished as we all hope it is, the momentum of the community, at least part of it, is going to shift back in Q4's direction pretty quickly. This would create divisions that the community frankly could not sustain.
Taking that into consideration along with the fact that the next major CPL event is months away is what is puzzling. There is clearly no need for a rush to judgement prior to the patch that I can see. I am going to guess that all of the pros (and amateurs) remember how to play Q3 and therefore don't need the time to practice. So, why now then?
I am sure this situation will develop over the next few weeks, but my hope is that if the patch is as good as id is saying it will be, the CPL and the community will do the right thing and extend their efforts in the right direction.....forward. At that point, pending the quality of the patch, all of the community's efforts should be extended towards improving Q4 as an esports platform.
In my opinion, if the patch rocks, the clearest and most immediate need is for GTV Q4. In this article from months ago, Cha0ticz called out to the community to step and make GTV a reality for Q4. Where is the next generation of developers that are willing and able to step up and get this done? Is this something that id is going to do (doubtful)? Q4Max? X-Battle? Anyone?
The harsh reality of the situation needs to be examined. If esports is going to thrive it has to be a spectator event because thats where the money is going to come from. Spectators from the media mainsteam don't want to watch a 6 year old game. Is anyone going to disagree with that? We need to broaden the viewing access to the matches and GTV will be essential in that regard.
This is all pending the release of the patch. If the patch is anything less than it should be, I will be the first to cheer the CPL as a forward thinking group (with apparently psychic powers). At this point however, I have my doubts about the timing of the decision and its wisdom at this stage of the game.
The Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) announced today that it will use id Software's Quake 3 as the primary featured one-versus-one game for the soon to be announced CPL 2006 World Season.
This decision was made after the following votes were submitted:
The CPL tournament staff - 90% in favor of Quake 3
The CPL world partners - 90% in favor of Quake 3
The CPL 1v1 committee - 85% in favor of Quake 3
The gamers (that voted on the CPL poll) - 80% in favor of Quake 3
The decision to host Quake 3 competitions was made based on existing features in Quake 3 that will enable the CPL to focus on providing the best tournament experience for both competitors and spectators.
This decision should not be regarded as critical towards id software or Raven, but should be considered a compliment of how well Quake 3 has withstood the test of time. The CPL will continue to provide feedback to id software on Quake 4, to help improve its tournament features until such point as the community feels that the game has the necessary features to replace Quake 3.
With almost 80% of the poll voting being cast for the return of Quake 3, the community of gamers and the competitors spoke out regarding which game they preferred to be playing at the 2006 World Season. The players have cited gameplay, GTV, and the large user base as reasons for their choice.
The CPL has chosen to feature during the CPL 2006 World Season the two games that are widely regarded as the best tournament games of all time: Counter Strike 1.6 and Quake 3. The 2006 World Season will conclude at The CPL Winter Final Championships, taking place Wednesday, December 13, to Sunday, December 17, 2006 at the landmark Hyatt Regency in Downtown, Dallas, Texas.
The website and online registration for the Winter Finals are expected to be launched on Tuesday, August 1, 2006.
