This extremely odd posting on QuakeCon's message board sparked some wild speculation on ESReality.com today.
QuakeCon Post:
I want to take this time to take back everything I had said about QuakeCon 2006 in the past.
At this time, I can't give you a definite yes or no on the event taking place.
I apologize for my very enthusiastic comments in the past, but until very recently, it was a 100% sure thing.
posted by Nate Borland, Director or Competitions for QuakeCon
This smacks of someone venting in public to me. While id has not officially responded to Nate's post, SyncError has simply answered with "See you at Quakecon."
With no new information released from id recently, these message board theatrics are a clear sign that the natives are getting restless. In the absense of real fact, people will take whatever snippets there are and spin them into their theories.
/me piles on...
"The winds of change, they are a blowing". God only knows what's going on behind the scenes at id, but I can't imagine they are pleased with the state of the online multiplayer community. id is one of the founding fathers of online gaming|esports and their last 2 titles have been disappointing to date. To be fair, it would have been almost impossible to live up to the hype and expectation of an online community that simply expects id to redefine gaming with every release.
I would think they are driven to fix Quake 4 with the 1.3 patch, but that doesn't mean they have the resources to get it done. With the concurrent development of Enemy Territories| Quake Wars and the unnamed future release that id is working on, it sounds to me like they have their plate full. It's not impossible with the right focus and execution and if id gets all this done, maybe they deserve all the fanboy hype Quake 4 was greeted with.
Ironically, if they pull it off, it won't be because of Carmack or the other celebrity developers. |
