| AGP Tour -- Another e-sports Failure? or not? | |
There is an interesting article on a new FPS 1 v 1 organization called AGP Tour that was posted on SKGaming and referenced on ESRreality. What makes it interesting? The guy running it, Jarod Reisin, has been involved in a number of interesting projects in and around e-sports for quite a while. GamingJunky,FragArcade and Progam3r magazine all come to mind. I have never quite been sure what these sites actually DID in some cases but they all looked well done. Regardless, what caught my eye in the article is this quote "we will...take pro gaming to that next level through a structured skill hierarchy, top notch presentation of every match, and heavy focus on each player. We plan on showcasing everything a professional sport needs to survive and succeed, for the players, for the communities and for the viewers." The "top notch presentation" part is what caught my eye and I thought I would take the time to list what I thought that would entail.
- Video and shoutcasting of matches. Not everyone has all the games and video is what you need to get people interested in a different game at a pro level.
- Consistent Q4TV or other for all matches. Lets face it -- for hardcore fans there is nothing better. (It's even better when people know wtf it is).
- Organized archives of previously played matches, both for demos and video.
- Consistent and positive relations with community sites. If I told you the number of times I requested information from the WSVG with no response you would puke.
- Don't try and go it alone. Use the community resources that already exist. Make your media assets available to others. If TC streams your video content but your logo is present how would that be a bad thing? Viral video marketing is one of the most powerful things on the web. Use brightcove or something similar ffs.
I may add to this list later. It's 5 in the morning and and my brain is fried. The bottom line is that there is no rocket science here. The community is ripe for someone willing to do this type of thing right on a larger scale. On the other hand, we are all pretty jaded and I don't think anyone is going to get excited about another press release detailing all the things someone new won't do any more than the last guy that promised an e-sports revolution. oh....and Unreal Tournament 3 ? wtf? |
