| Pickup Channel in Decline | |

I am posting these images to give some perspective on the why's and wherefore's of some things that will be happening in the pickup channel. For some reason, many of the members of the channel seem to have forgotten what things were like before the pickup channel was working. There seems to be a careless feeling about whether or not you miss a pickup that you signed up for -- ("Oh well, it's just a strike"). No, it's not just a strike. It's one more blown up pickup where players have been waiting for 20-30 minutes to get in a game and then have to scramble around at the last second to find the last player.
If aren't going to be available to play you need to hit !remove. Simple. Admin's will no longer accept excuses so don't bother offering them. "My brother was using my computer" "My gf made me do it". Basically, I don't care what your excuse is. It's inconsiderate of the other players that signed up and will ultimately ruin the channel.
As the graphics above clearly demonstrate, the number of games in the channel are in decline. I have seen this happen before in other pickup channels and we are going to head off the problems before they get worse.
If you miss games repeatedly you will be banned and the bans will escalate in length to whatever is necessary to remove the problem. The strike system is there to assist admins NOT to help you figure out how many pickups you can safely blow off without real repercussions. If you are consistently late for a pickup game you will be banned from the channel. If you leave a pickup game in mid game you will be banned from the channel for a period of time. If you are banned from the channel you need to stay off the pickup server.
Admins will get as aggressive with bans as necessary to make the channel function as intended. If, at the end of the process, we have 20 players left in the channel but it works... so be it.
So be warned. Missing pickups, showing up late and leaving a game before its finished or otherwise disrupting the flow of a pickup game will get you banned. Are we going to post rules to let you know just how far you can push it without getting banned? NOPE. The bans will be time limited but of varying length. |

Thanks Mesh, A lot of people including myself get frustrated waiting 20+ minutes to play a 20 minute game. A suggestion that I have to make it go faster is get rid of captains. Usually we have to wait like 5 minutes for both captains to be present, then picking/gaunting sometimes takes another 5 minutes. Instead, Why couldn't everybody just hit the "auto join" button once connected and the game can start as soon as a map is picked and 8 people are present? |

I think we should add what the spontan channel has as far as adding up for CTF / iCTF / IFT / TDM.
I think that would be cool. |

Oh I also think the decline is for not having 2 servers anymore so people don't add up until the first one is finished usually. 2 games > 1 games thus lowering the numbers. |

Unfortunately, there's nothing proven in your post that leads anyone to believe that pickups are dying because of people not showing up.
First off, the statistics you put only show a few months. You cannot judge a channel by only a few months. In all honesty, you would need stats for a few years to know exactly when it drops, and why.
Secondly, school is a large factor in that graph. Look near the end, it's dropping rapidly. This is the time of year, in both Canada and the US, of exams for universities and colleges, and maybe high schools in the US. People are probably busy studying.
Thirdly, the decline at the end of march could represent the March break. Now, a lot of people could of been away on vacation for that march break. I know the march break varies for certain places for time, but it's still a factor that could be affecting the pickups.
Certain months, you will have decline, it's nothing major. Once the summer hits, you should receive a lot more pickups.
Regarding the banning situation, I think that the strike system should remain in place. Sure, people abuse the system, but I think people will have valid excuses.
Also, with my experience, people tend to NOT be patient once they enter the server. Lets say a persons computer crashes when the last person !adds. They go to restart, get in irc, and it's fair to say that 5 minutes have passed. They get in the server, and they have a sub in already.
Normally, they would get a strike. Unfair, but, they still have chances.
But with the new ban system, you're going to ban them for 3 days?
I know people can give tons of excuses, but you should not be hostile towards people, just because pickups are declining. Like I said, you need a much larger time period to properly judge the situation. Regarding this month, I would definitely blame the decline on exams.
Just trying to help =) |

I agree mesh people should not be rude and add up to two pub/g's at the same time. They shoudl always show up for the ones the put in for.
Not sure whats wrong with your stats. I've been around since the start of this bot and I've never seen it so active? Hell people have games at 1pm now and 3 games going on a wednesday night. If I want to play quake its almost to the point on the peak hours where I'm almost certainly going to find a game wiht no issue whatsoever!
3 month ago you had to wait till 7pm EST o get a game going if you were lucky.
Anyway off point. I agree with what you say about the other stuff and I would expect to be banned and enforced if I sign up and don't show up for a pub and so should everyone else. |
