This really isn't the place for this ... but whatever.
I moved not long ago. I wanted to get some space from my old life and spend some time reassessing things. Ultimately, this was a good decision though it's not been without it's repercussions.
Anyway, not to digress too much, but one of those repercussions is you tend to lose track of people. I mean, that was the point, right? Sometimes you need to take a step back and get some distance and filter people back into your life a little at a time -- but on your terms.
To make a long story short I was telling some people I play in a band with now about a drummer I knew back in the day: Jeff Wood. We were talking about various drummers in the area and I decided to google him and find some recording or other of the various bands he powered from the drum kit. I say "powered from the drum kit' because he was amazing. I have never seen anyone play with the passion and conviction that Jeff had.
Instead of finding a recording I found a site telling me that he died in September. I knew he had a tumor, but the last I heard he was recovering and fuck-- if anybody could beat brain cancer he was the one. Jeff was unstoppable. The crazy mofo did 1200 sit ups a day. I mean...how nuts is that? He was like a cartoon character that, like a fool, I just assumed he would never go down.
Anyway, I thought I would put up the only recording I could find of his band Smashmouth (no, not them). It's a shitty camcorder vid, but it's all I could find. These guys were so ahead of their time it was ridiculous. This was very early 90's.
Anyway, rest in peace Jeff. I was proud to have you for a friend. It sucks how life pulls us apart from people we care about. We all need to be careful of that. Make sure you tell a friend you love 'em from time to time because sometimes you don't get the chance before they are gone.

I am sorry to hear about that, I remember that feeling too, two years ago my cousin died when she was 12, she was a very lovely girl and I remember thinking she would be very sucessful later in life. Her and I were pretty close and I always thought I would die long before her, and to see her die at such a young age really gets ya.
