IGA Partners with id on Quake Live
Quake LiveIGA announced their partnership with id on Quake Live today. The announcement was covered here and confirmed a few details that have been a little vague.

"Quake Live will deliver a full community experience, including stat tracking, friends lists, matchmaking, and sponsored tournaments, all within your standard web browser."

Fans of Battlefield 2142 might remember a minor storm of controversy when in game ads were served up by IGA's servers. Tin foil hats were issued and worn with pride until EA released this statement:

The advertising program in Battlefield 2142 does not access any files which are not directly related to the game. It does not capture personal data such as cookies, account login detail, or surfing history.

BF 2142 delivers ads by region. The advertising system uses a player's IP address to determine the region of the player, assisting to serve the appropriate ads by region and language. For instance, a player in Paris might be presented with ads in French. The information collected will not be repurposed for other uses.

Battlefield 2142 also tracks "impression data" related to in-game advertisements: location of a billboard in the game, brand advertised, duration of advertisement impression, etc. This information is used to help advertisers qualify the reach of a given advertisement.

There is not a whole lot of info available on the system being used in Quake Live but a good guess would say it's the same. In my opinion there is one gigantic difference between EA and id. EA was trying to soft pedal the notion that they were trying to "enhance the game experience". um, RIGHT. id on the other hand is releasing a free game that's totally ad supported. I don't see how that can go wrong honestly.

Hopefully, more information will be released soon.
