| CPL Considers Quake 4 for CPL Winter | |
The CPL is considering adding Quake 4 or Quake 3 for the upcoming CPL Winter Championship Event. As many of us know, the CPL has had a long history with the Quake series. As one of the pioneers of professional esports gaming, the CPL had the opportunity to screw things up first -- and they did. Any time an organization is bold enough to blaze a new trail there will be wrong turns, sometimes right over the edge of a cliff. Many of the organizations that have followed in the CPL's footsteps would likely acknowledge the many lessons they learned from watching their early efforts.
The point of this article is not to rehash the past. Should the CPL pick up Quake 4? That's not an easy question to answer, but it's one they and the community need to address. There is a tremendous opportunity available for any organization savvy enough to capitalize on it. As I have noted in previous articles, the events featuring Quake 4 this past year have taken a strong step forward in terms of coverage. The WSVG and ESWC were both lacking in many key areas, but the planning and execution undeniably improved this year.
Can the CPL pull off good coverage and a well run event? Yes. I would say there is no doubt they can. This is especially true in light of the resources that are out there to help them do it. If Angel Munoz, the head of the CPL, is smart he will engage the community itself early and often. By that, I don't mean random forum postings like this one: Link.
If Games Media Properties is serious about developing their internet media sites like GameRiot.com wouldn't it make sense to cover an event in conjunction with the rest of the community in support of the CPL? Shouldn't the CPL take advantage of the resources that are there? YES and YES.
Simply put, it's become more and more clear to me that there needs to be new approaches to make esports work. There is no reason any one organization has to pull the load alone. Being a trail blazing pioneer sounds great on paper, but all too often you sail off the edge of the earth and disappear.
If the CPL can do shoutcast streams in conjunction with GameRiot.coms on-site coverage, with rapidly updated match information for the community sites, Q4TV and demo downloads for matches...that would be a home run for the CPL and the community. None of that is hard to implement. With the excellent work of the Q4Max team towards making Quake 4 a solid esports platform it should be easy. Servers can enforce demos and stats recording. You just need a config and some planning. Q4TV is easy as pie. Streams and shoutcasting are not hard to implement, especially if you engage other parties for assistance.
So the question really isn't CAN the CPL do this. The question really is WILL they? Would they seek help from the community? Would the community step up if there is an opportunity? If the CPL needs help with Q4TV would SyncError and id help them out? If they need help configuring their servers would Q4Max give them configs to spec? Would GameRiot cover the event with the same effort they put into WSVG?
In life, when you ask the hard questions you rarely get answers....just more questions. |
