| Quake 4 News - The Deafening Sound of Silence | |
The Quake 4 CTF community is waiting. We are waiting for a patch, news of a patch, a hint or the promise of a hint. Anything. I have never seen such active inactivity. I have spoken to literally dozens of players who are on the bench impatiently waiting for Raven/Id to get their act together and make this game what it was supposed to be.
Speaking for myself, I love Quake 4. I think the smoothness and sophistication of the movement right out of the box is beyond any reasonable expectations. I had many conversations with Q3 ctf players discussing what we wanted from Q4 ctf prior to its release and the necessity of sophisticated movement was brought up in every one. Raven made that a reality. Of course, there were always debates of weapons balance in Q3 and Q4 is no different. Either the rail is too powerful or other weapons not powerful enough. The nail gun etc etc. That debate will never end.We wanted something different, yet the same and I think we got it.
What is maddening and nearly unforgivable however, is the astonishing lack of thought that went into the needs of the competitive community prior to Quake 4's release. There is no pause in the original game. How is that possible for a game that was announced for the CPL tour prior to its release? How hard would that have been for the game designers to implement? I can't imagine it would have been difficult.
There was no team overlay until Q4Max and X-Battle put one in. Locked teams? Same. One of the craziest things is that the clock counts down instead of up. Why would you decide to change that from the default in Q3? We have been playing with the clock counting up for more than 6 years, why change it? Personally, I don't care. I find it just as easy to subtract as add, but what about overtime? How are we supposed to time powerups with the infinity symbol staring us in the face? Or is that a "feature", not a bug?
The bottom line is that Raven needs to step up to the plate and offer some hope. The Q4 ctf community is shrinking at an alarming rate. Why should competitive players have to sit around hoping and praying that the mod community is going to save this game. That responsibility properly lies with the original developers and its time for Raven/Id to do exactly that. |
