| Quake 4 News - CES Interview with id Software's Todd Hollenshead and John Carmack | |
There is a really interesting interview over at gaminformer.com of two of the owners of id software, John Carmack and Todd Hollenshead. They talk about a range of topics, covering a lot of aspects of the gaming industry in general, but I found Carmack's comments regarding Microsoft Vista to be the most interesting.
"It’s a tough thing for Microsoft, where, essentially, Windows XP was a just fine operating system. Before that, there were horrible problems with Windows. But once they got there, it did everything an operating system is supposed to do. Nothing is going to help a new game by going to a new operating system. There were some clear wins going from Windows 95 to Windows XP for games, but there really aren’t any for Vista. They’re artificially doing that by tying DX10 so close it, which is really nothing about the OS. It’s a hardware-interface spec. It’s an artificial thing that they’re doing there. They’re really grasping at straws for reasons to upgrade the operating system. I suspect I could run XP for a great many more years without having a problem with it."
There was also some discussion of potential backwards compatibility issues with some of id's titles on Vista. It doesn't sound as if there are any concrete/known issues with running id's games on Vista, more that in their view there is no advantage along with some potential for problems as yet unknown. All in all, if you are a Quaker I think it would be wise to hold off on adopting Vista in the short term and let things develop a bit before upgrading.

Vista is eye candy, thats all. I cannot say it's more secure because it won't be ;-) |
