In what can either be viewed as an attempt to overcome fading relevance or a pioneering move towards greatness, Angel Munoz announced that the CPL is going to be developing a new game that will set the standard for esports FPS games. The game will be called Severity and will be developed using the Quake 3 netcode and id rendering technology.
“Severity will be the first videogame conceived from the ground up to ensure the growth and appeal of multiplayer game competitions worldwide,” said Tom Mustaine, Director of Game Development at the CPL’s new studio.
The CPL has attempted to set itself apart in the last 6 months through licensing and promotional deals with PlayLinc and Directron among others. It is also reportedly developing a proprietary anti-cheat system as well.
Clearly, the CPL is attempting to rise above the pack of other esports organizations such as the WSVG or MGL. Whether or not any of these initiatives will have any long lasting impact is up in the air. We'll be watching...
