The silence coming from the Quake world and e-sports in general is....deafening. There is damn near nothing to write about with the exception of a few small tournies and just about nothing else. So is no news good news? In this case: hardly. With the state of the economy weighing on everyone's mind, I would imagine that discretionary ad revenue is just about dry as a bone for the remaining e-sports sponsors.
With Nvidia dealing with a variety of legal issues, (here, here) are they going to be in a position to sponsor going forward? Who knows? I would say the bigger problem is the fact that there isn't a truly compelling reason to upgrade any time soon. The news is not much better for Intel either. They just dropped their 4th quarter projections by a billion dollars.
With the major sponsors tightening their belts what's next? I would have to say that the days of the big sponsored events may be over. I have stated a couple of times that we are going to have to do it ourselves: it's grass roots or nothing people. Sorry, but in my humble opinion that's what its got to be. We need to start small and build up to a mainstream presence and Quake Live has to be a crucial part of that so let's hope that id doesn't screw this up.
Obviously, I can't say anything about Quake Live (damn NDA). I will say that I think id gets it and with the right circumstances this could be the perfect platform moving forward. There are hundreds of unanswered questions still but I think if the game is good and if people play it everything may fall into place.
The component that worries me the most is: Will the community work together? or will the 'elite' players shun the n00bs? Will people step up and do something to help things come together? TC tried to do that in our small way during Q4 and it worked fairly well although I know some would disagree.
In any case, the current state of the Quake community is dismal with a few small signs of hope and, like this article, there are more questions than answers.
On another note: holy shit! We passed a really big milestone: we are over 1,000,000 unique visits (that's including the relentless assault of search engine bots, but still...). Thank you all for reading. Play more Quake and tell your friends!
Valve announced that Steam Cloud is set to release this week with support for Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Counter Strike and Left 4 Dead. You want to kill piracy? THIS is how you do it. With Steam Cloud you will be able to access configuration files, save games etc.
It's remarkable that a company that is so innovative with their games development is also breaking so much new ground in their business as well. I can definitely see a future in which distributors like Activision and EA simply cease to exist. ( I know......I am such an optimist).
I stumbled across an interesting post on Wired talking about a tech company that's developing a "Minority Report" style of interface. It's pretty interesting but you can tell its got a long way to go before it would be available to use in the real world. Check it out:
I sincerely hope that id software is paying close attention to the complete and utter insanity that is EA's DRM program as well as the following unrelated idiocy. There have only been a few companies out there that have managed to screw up to such a stunning extent -- the only one the leaps to mind is Sony's ill fated attempt to use a rootkit to prevent a paying customer from exercising their rights under fair use.
Get this: Apparently, EA screwed up some of the manuals for Red Alert 3 and a significant number of them only had 19 characters instead of 20. When their tech support was contacted by irate consumers who were unable to install their purchased software they had this to say:
'...There is currently a work-around that may allow you to bypass this issue. Since you have the first 19 characters of the code already, you can basically try guessing the last character. To do this, simply enter your existing code, and then for the last character, try the letters A-Z, and then the numbers 0-9. You should eventually get the right combination, and be able to play the game....'
So basically I pay you $50.00 for a game and then I get to play wheel of fortune with the cd key? Seriously, if I ever hear something like that pertaining to an id title...
